The Guest list is the first book that I have read by the author Lucy Foley. But I am making it a point to buy her first published book as well, The Hunting Party.
I so loved this book. This is what a crime thriller book should be! I finished the book in two days, it was unputdownable.
Jules Keegan, the founder of digital magazine, The Download and William Slater, the charming and upcoming TV star decides to wed after a whirlwind romance of a few months. The wedding is supposed to be the wedding of the season, with two of the known faces of the entertainment industry coming together ‘binding’ in the holy matrimony.
Jules is a control freak bride who wants the wedding to picture perfect. The wedding location is this secluded island island off in Irish coast. It is remote and far away from the city crowd. Because, that what symbolizes them as a couple, stylish, ambitious and a whole lot of adventure.
The Guest list for the wedding includes friends and family from both sides. Their loved ones who adore them for who they are. Yet a lot of the guests seem to dislike the couple. They hate them for what Jules and Will have achieved in their lives, money, fame and recognition.
A disgruntled bridesmaid who seems to hate being at the wedding.
A self loathing best man who is jealous of everything that the groom has.
A plus one, who is jealous of her husband’s closeness with the bride.
And then there is a dead body amongst them.
About the characters in the Guest list:
I have to give it to the writer Lucy Foley for writing for such believable characters. An ambitious yet ruthless Jules, who wont stop at nothing to achieve her desires. Dep down, her soul is a scared little girl devoid of love from both her parents.
William, or will, an attractive man who has everything going for him. A flourishing career, stunning fiancé and he is loaded. Plus, a man with impeccable manners. Where have we met such men before?
It’s easy to fall for men like that. A gentleman who can do no wrong. But he has a past, everyone has? Isn’t it?
Olivia, the bridesmaid, is messed up in her head. It is easy for few folks to get over a breakup, but for some, the betrayal takes the life out of them. Olivia is one such kid, trying to navigate through her emotions.
I felt sorry for Hannah. She also represents millions of women who lose their fun selves post motherhood. Their marriage crumbling right before their eyes, it’s them who has to bear the blame. It’s always the women who became vanilla, don’t they?
Aoife is my favorite though. She is the underdog with a cool head. The one whose life is always in her control. Someone who prefers to disappears in the crowd, intentionally.
The story is a slow, slow burn with a fabulous climax. It’s been a while since I have read such a satisfying crime thriller.
The book of one of the highest rated crime thrillers on amazon and it rightly deserves it’s spot.
If you are a fan of the genre, The Guest List by Lucy Foley is a must read.
This one has to be 5/5. There is nothing that I don’t like about the book.
